A MESSAGE FROM FUNHOUSE

Hope all of you are doing well. The psychological side effects from the news and media blitz on the population are probably worse than the chances of getting the "illness"! For us, this sitting around at home is making us crazy! Drawing on paper is getting old, painting is getting old, tattooing ourselves is getting old... we miss our clients, the shop and our jobs!

This is just a reminder that, for those who have left deposits for appointments that were interrupted during this time, these will be honoured. Each artist has a record of the deposits received and  are ready to tattoo, as soon as we get the green light!!

Remember, there are other news sources out there, ones which report positive aspects and points of view which can ease any paranoia and stress, and can empower you to make more educated decisions for yourselves. We are focusing on the light at the end of this fudge tunnel, if you know what I mean.
Start planning to fill in those empty skin spaces! We are here to consult anytime you'd like. Email us: contact@funhousetattoo.net and we'll get back to you ASAP. Any messages to specific artists will be forwarded to them. Art, Justin, Pete, Bennet and Tyler.

Soon we'll be back in action, so will you and hopefully in time for a great summer!

SKATEBOARD LEGEND, JEFF GROSSO, PASSED AWAY....

Jeff Grosso turned pro in the mid 80's, around the same time we did, he was in our generation of pro skaters. He was gnarly. A total power skater. I (Art) remember doing a demo in Milwaukee at the Turf skatepark and he was there, with a few other Santa Cruz riders. He was doing tail taps at the top of the vertical extensions on the round ends of the capsule half pipe... that was radical. It had a rounded lip and lots of vertical!  Below is an article from TMZ about his death.

Jeff plugged us on his show "Love Letters to Skateboarding" and now we're doing the same for him. It's a real loss for skateboarding, especially to all of us from that generation. We were all kids, pro skaters, travelling, going to contests... doing our thing without any thought as to the impact any of us would have 35 years later!!

Thanks Jeff for what you've done for skating. RIP

7:11 AM PT -- Law enforcement tells TMZ Sports ... Grosso passed away Tuesday at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California. We're told there is no obvious cause of death at the moment. An autopsy is expected to be performed.

Skateboarding legend Jeff Grosso -- one of the biggest skate stars of the '80s -- has died. He was only 51.
Thrasher Magazine's Michael Burnett confirmed the news ... saying on Tuesday, "Today we have the terrible task of saying a heartbreaking goodbye to beloved verticalist, commentator and friend of the mag, Jeff Grosso."
The details surrounding Grosso's death are unclear. We're working on it. He is survived by his 8-year-old son Oliver, who Burnett mentions in his tribute to Jeff.

"Jeff went from number-one amateur to '80s superstar to cautionary tale and back again. His latest role as lovable curmudgeon, host of his own history-packed web series and keeper of skateboarding’s righteousness, unafraid to offend or annoy in his quest to educate, was by far his greatest – second only to being Oliver’s dad."
The "cautionary tale" is a reference to Jeff's struggles with substance abuse. He talked openly about issues with pain pills and heroin. In fact, Jeff OD'd 3 times before 2017.
"He will be sorely, sorely missed. Our hearts go out to his family and many friends. RIP," Burnett said. Jeff shot to skate stardom in the '80s and went on to host "Vans' Love Letters to Skateboarding."

Jeff was also BELOVED by skate legends like Tony Hawk -- who paid tribute to Grosso.
"Jeff was a true skateboarder at his core, and a great wealth of entertainment, insight and valuable philosophy to a younger generation. I was lucky enough to skate with him over the last four decades and occasionally featured on his Vans’ Love Letters series.”
Hawk continued ... "One of the last times we spoke, we talked about how ridiculous it is that we still get to do this for a living and that anyone even cares what we do or think in terms of skateboarding at our age."
"I believe Jeff is a big reason that anyone truly cares, and skateboarding was lucky to have him as an ambassador and gatekeeper to its history. He was also a great father, which is obvious in his last social media post. Thank you Jeff, words cannot describe how much we will miss you."

INTERESTING STUFF - FROM FEBRUARY 2020

Some repairs look tough.. this one is not as tough as it looks because the tattoo on the left is old. Usually, the older the tattoo the easier it is to cover! Some of the old shading can actually be complimentary when doing cover-ups or repairs because it ages  into a shade that is hard to duplicate. This one was tattooed by Art on Theo.

This Pineapple skull is awesome! Great idea by Natalie!! She always has great ideas, she has a genetically genius brain! By Art. As a tattoo artist, the job is not always about creating, sometimes it's about doing the best you can by doing other ideas that clients bring in.

Pete's dog Bucko... the stories about him are fucking great! Tattooing animals is one of the funnest things to do in this job. Especially to commemorate the lives of these loyal friends! This guy, though he looks innocent and cute, has had a real colourful life!! By Art. Thanks Pete!!

TBIRD TATTOOS

Take a look at these. In the Vancouver Tattoo scene, this guy has perfected a style of tattooing. This does NOT mean that he's limited to that style of tattooing, unlike so many tattoo artists here and globally. Not only does it have his 'signature' all over it, but it's the best and closest signature to original traditional tattooing... just BETTER.

GREATS...

Fuckin Rulers. Come see what it takes to be great. There's good then there's Great. Our criteria to get this label is not the same as most Vancouver tattoo shops' requirements. Ethically, artistically and as people they're tops. We've had some "tattoo artists" in here that didn't match the requirements. Funny thing about this tattoo shop is that it ALWAYS purifies itself. It cleans out the cobwebs, the egos, the attitudes and leaves EXACTLY what it needs. The cream floats to the top.

SURREALIST SURFER ON A COSMIC WAVE.

COSMIC WAVE SURFER! I did this on Vancouver actor and voice over artist, David. He always has great tattoo ideas! This is one of the funnest tattoos Ive done in a while!! You can see the pores in the skin, this gives an indication of how small the details are. This tattoo is only the beginning of filling a space between the "sock" of Salvador Dali surrealist greatness from the knee down and already existing images he has at the top of the thigh. Really looking forward to doing more!!!

MARK LANKIN SAMPLER...

More talent in his little finger than most have in their whole body! That's what we've always said about Mark. He prefers to do large pieces, mostly Japanese style work but is not limited to any style or trend.

Paintings, illustrations, drawings and carvings are artistic side outlets besides tattooing. You should see some of this stuff.... he has tattooed from the east to the west of Canada, has been tattooing in and around Vancouver for the last 21 plus years. He is legendary in the Vancouver tattoo scene.

If you're in the market for large black and grey work. Call the shop - (604) 879-4114 or come by to book with Mark.

HOCKEY PLAYER TATTOO BY JUSTIN COX

COME SEE JUSTIN COX FOR SOME MORE OF THIS!

REALISTIC TATTOOING AND INFO ON 'PINS' aka Needles.

Here are some small to large realistic and semi realistic pieces. These, though they are small, take time to do. The details make the difference between a good tattoo and a GREAT tattoo. Tattooing can be a time consuming task depending on the image and the area of the body it is to be placed on! The ribs, despite having a solid mass of ribs underneath, are one of the most time consuming areas to tattoo!... not to mention painful. (all tattoos below, by Art).

The 3 image painting below was done in stages and each session saw a finished section by the end. Some pieces, especially realistic tattooing, do not have visible outlines like the traditional and Neo traditional images do, so we prefer to do finished sections and leave some guide marks in order to re-stencil the areas to be tattooed in the next session. It's about strategy!! Gotta plan ahead!

The small details in the images below were done with a tight 3 needle "bug pin" grouping. This term "bug pin" was used to describe the pins used in entomology (the study of insects). We've all seen the boards with insects pinned to them. These pins are made of a finer wire than "standard" tattooing pins. They originally were called 00 gauge. Double ott was the term. These days, 'bug pin' is a general term to label any pin which is 00 or smaller. Theses smaller pins, make smaller punctures because of the fine gauge of the wire they are made from along with the length of the taper so it's rare to see any bloody looking redness around finished tattoos or any horrible looking bruising, in fact, it's rare to get any blood out of clients due to the considerably lessened trauma to the skin which standard tattooing pins can.

Many clients say that being tattooed with these pins is considerably less painful and healing was faster! It's true!! We all use them here. Not for every technique but for most and all the results are awesome!!

The angel below was a 6 hour sit. The lack of redness or bruising shows how little trauma these bug pin needle groupings cause. 6 hours!! Look at the details. These are details that only small needle groupings made from bug pins can do, or a "standard" long tapered single needle!
